Task 11.2 - Role play on "Just Culture" - Learning from events
Goals:
To promote understanding of just culture and the importance of reporting incidents to continuously improve safety. The exercise also touches on pilot judgment and self-evaluation.
Activity:
Scenario:
In the group, determine a realistic drone-related incident scenario or near miss, for example:
In the group, determine a realistic drone-related incident scenario or near miss, for example:
- The drone loses its GPS signal and drifts towards a prohibited area.
- The pilot loses visual contact with the drone.
- The drone lands hard due to unexpected wind.
- The pilot forgets an item in the pre-flight checklist.
Role play:
Assign roles in the group:
Assign roles in the group:
- Pilots: Explains honestly what happened - both your own mistakes and external circumstances.
- Colleagues/mentors: Listening, asking clarifying questions and focusing on learning, not blame. They should promote reflection on pilot judgment and situational awareness.
Finishing touches:
Discuss in plenary:
Discuss in plenary:
- What was it like for the pilot to share the event?
- How did the group create a safe atmosphere for openness?
- What did you learn from the incident?
- What can be changed in routines, training (such as crowd training) or equipment to prevent similar situations?
- Emphasize that reporting provides learning and improves the safety culture.
No special materials required, just an open space for discussion.Task: Operating volumes in practice - A spatial understanding exerciseGoals:To physically understand and visualize the flight area, contingency area and buffer zone, and how these relate to ground risk.Activity:Select area:
Find an open area, indoors (e.g. gym, hallway) or outdoors (like a park or paved space).Scenario:
Imagine a simple drone flight in a straight line or circular path at a moderate speed.Physical setup:
Use accessible and affordable materials:

Imagine a simple drone flight in a straight line or circular path at a moderate speed.Physical setup:
Use accessible and affordable materials:
- Tape (masking tape, painter's tape) or twine to mark the floor
- chalk, if outdoors
- Cones/markers: Plastic bottles, shoes or pieces of paper can be used
Select the following:
- The flying area where the drone operates.
- Preparedness area around, large enough to allow action if the drone deviates. Think: "drone speed × 2 seconds".
- Buffer zone outside this again. Discuss how it protects intruders and how size is affected by drone height and weight.
Simulation of ground risk:
Once the areas have been marked, discuss and simulate how you would manage risk on the ground. Where can people (represented by objects or team members) stay? Where should there be barriers or signage? Discuss how to avoid flying over intruders.Simple aids: Tape, chalk, string, cones or markers.
