Task 17.3 - Airspace dilemmas
Goals:
To stimulate critical thinking, safety awareness and communication around unforeseen airspace situations.
Learning materials:
- Printed "Dilemma cards" with short scenarios.
- Optional: Whiteboard or flipchart for brainstorming.
Activity:
Sharing dilemmas:
Divide the group into smaller groups. Give each group 2-3 dilemma cards.
Examples:
- Dilemma A: You are flying VLOS in Class G airspace at an altitude of 80 m and hear a low-flying manned aircraft approaching. What do you do immediately?
- Dilemma B: You have SORA and NOTAM for BVLOS in search and rescue missions. Suddenly, you are asked to fly into a temporary air sports area. How do you handle this?
- Dilemma C: You have clearance via NINOX to fly within 5 km of a controlled airport. In the middle of the mission, LTT contacts you and asks you to land immediately due to changes in air traffic, but the call is bad. What should you do?
Discussion and solution development:
- What are the most important safety priorities?
- What rules or principles apply?
- What communication needs to happen, and with whom?
- What could have been done in advance to reduce risk?
- What are the possible consequences of the wrong action?
Presentation and joint reflection:
- The groups present the dilemmas and their solutions.
- Discussion led by facilitator. Compare approaches, highlight best practices, and link it to systematic safety work and external influence.
