Task 17.2 - NOTAM & NINOX - Mission Impossible!

Goals:

To learn NOTAM and NINOX procedures in an engaging and practical way, with an emphasis on accuracy and communication.

Learning materials:

  • Printed scenario cards (simple text descriptions)
  • Print templates for a simplified NOTAM form
  • Pens/pencils
  • Timer (phone works fine)
  • Optional: Props for "NOTAM office" and "LTT approval" (e.g. a chair as a control tower)

Activity:

Layering:

Divide the group into two or more teams. Explain that they are competing drone operators to complete their missions quickly and accurately.

Round 1: NOTAM Relay

  • Each team is given a unique scenario that requires NOTAM (e.g.: "Conduct BVLOS inspection of pipeline in Class G rural airspace, 150 m altitude, 3 hours duration").
  • The NOTAM form is divided into sections: Contact info, date/time, horizontal area, vertical extent and description.
  • Each participant runs to their section, fills in the correct information (UTC time, WGS84 coordinates), and runs back to "switch".
  • The last participant "submits" the NOTAM by delivering the form to the "NOTAM office".

Points for both speed and precision. Mistakes result in "penalties" - such as new laps or fictitious fines.

Round 2: NINOX approval

  • New scenario requires approval via NINOX (e.g.: "Inspection of buildings within 5 km from controlled airport").
  • One participant is a "Drone Pilot", another is an "LTT Approver".
  • The "pilot" must submit a permit request with information about name, company, license, altitude, purpose, etc.
  • "LTT" asks control questions and decides whether permission is granted based on accurate and clear communication.

LTT can be "strict but fair". First team with approved request gets points.
