Task 16.2 - "Discover the danger" - Reaction time challenge
Goals:
A physical and engaging activity that simulates real challenges with vision, hearing and reaction time, as well as situational awareness.
Learning objectives:
- Experience how reaction time varies and is affected by sensory input.
- Understand the importance of scanning techniques and the use of peripheral vision.
- Appreciate the role of hearing in hazard detection when vision is limited.
Material:
Large space, stopwatch, visible object (ball, cloth), sound signal (whistle, shout), possibly a play drone.
Instructions:
Setup:
Divide into small groups. Assign roles: "Drone pilot", "Observer", "Timekeeper".
Three rounds of challenges:
- Visual hazard detection: The observer follows the object and shouts "DANGER!" by visual signals. The timer registers the reaction time.
- Audio signal detection: The observer is distracted (e.g. counting) and should react to a predetermined sound signal. Reaction time is logged.
- Combined situational awareness: Visual and audio cues appear randomly. The observer must react correctly and quickly.
Debrief:
Discuss reaction times, challenges, the importance of scanning, the consequences of distraction, and how training improves reaction.
