Task 16.1 - IMSAFE Self-Assessment and Risk Management Discussion

Goals:

A discussion-based activity that addresses the core principles of human limitations awareness, based on the I.M.S.A.F.E. checklist. The activity requires minimal resources and promotes critical reflection on personal preparedness.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the components and importance of the I.M.S.A.F.E. checklist for drone pilots.
  • Identify how physical and psychological factors can affect pilot performance and safety.
  • Develop practical strategies to mitigate health and wellbeing risks before and during drone operations.

Material:

Whiteboard or flipchart (optional), pens.

Instructions:

Introduction:

Review the I.M.S.A.F.E. (Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Eating) checklist and its purpose - to ensure that the pilot is in good physical and mental condition before flight. Emphasize that human error is the leading cause of accidents in drone operations.

Discussion in small groups:

Divide the group into smaller subgroups. Each group gets one or two items from the checklist.

The task:

  • Define assigned element(s) in drone context.
  • Create specific scenarios where these can lead to unsafe situations.
  • Suggest practical and reasonable measures to reduce risk (e.g. rest, breaks, training, experience building).

Joint presentation and discussion:

Each group presents their findings. Discuss common themes and how systematic use of the checklist can minimize health-related risks and contribute to safer drone operations.
